Introduction

Foster first captivated American Idol fans during his audition by sharing that he was studying to become an oncologist, humorously mentioning he could be a “singing oncologist.” His passion for helping others, combined with his classic country voice, made him an instant fan favorite.

Throughout the competition, Foster, the Louisiana native and LSU student, brought classic country music to the Idol stage. He’s performed hits such as “Neon Moon” by Brooks & Dunn and “Colin Baton Rouge,” originally by Garth Brooks. He even took on Elvis Presley’s classic, “Jailhouse Rock,” showcasing his southern charm.

His most memorable performance, however, was an original song titled “Tell That Angel I Love Her.” Foster said,

“I wrote this for the two sweet angels that were tragically taken from us on New Year’s Eve. Maggie was one of my best friends and Caroline was a good friend of mine who I regret not knowing even more. Until we meet again. So much love to everyone.”

The song he wrote in memory of his best friend, Maggie Dunn, who tragically lost her life in a car accident on New Year’s Eve 2022, when a police officer ran a red light while pursuing a suspect.

The heartfelt song captures the grief of losing a loved one and expresses a prayer to God. Some of the lyrics are,

“Each tear that falls on my guitar
Is a hug from afar
Lord, won’t you tell that angel I love her?
As y’all live in the stars”

This moving piece resonated with millions.

John Foster Performs “I Told You So”

John Foster took on a Randy Travis hit during Monday night’s “Iconic Idol Moments” episode. He revisited the Randy Travis classic “I Told You So,” a song Randy first recorded and released in 1988. The country star rerecorded it with Carrie Underwood and performed it with her on American Idol in 2009.

Randy Travis himself has faced significant challenges; over a decade ago, he suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed and unable to speak. Thanks to AI and modern technology, he has made remarkable progress and is now touring again.

John Foster honored the classic country artist with a soulful rendition of Randy Travis’ “I Told You So.” The Idol contestant performed without his signature guitar, letting his vocals shine. Watch below!
